– James reveals monster making secrets to kids and adults.
Thanks for your interest in Monster Classes or a Monster Party. Here's some info on both types of events.
Ceramic Class Instruction (for James coming to a classroom setting):
Class includes instruction in creating ceramic monsters to teach basic sculpture techniques, including forming, joining, blending, and texturing. Instruction is also given in using figurative sculpture to express posturing, personality, and emotion.
How it works is I come to the classroom and spend about an hour teaching the kids how to make their own ceramic monster. I bring all the supplies and tools including the boards that they form the clay on. The clay is non-staining and washable and easy to clean up. It's good to have access to a sink for participants to wash their hands and for clean up. I need about 15 minutes prep and about 15 minutes clean-up. If your school does not have a kiln, I load them in my car and take them to my studio where I dry them, bisq them, stain them, glaze them, and then high fire them. The process takes about 2 to 3 weeks and the finnished monsters are returned to you.
The cost is $160 per classroom (20 - 30 students each).
If your school does have a kiln for firing the monsters, the price is significantly lower and the proceedure changes to the kids painting their monsters after they are fired. Please call me to work out the details. For a child or adult party, I come to the place you're having the party and I spend about an hour teaching everyone how to make their own ceramic monster. I bring all the supplies and tools, and you just need to have a table or counter area where they can all sit for the activity. The clay is non-staining and washable and easy to clean up. After the monster making is finnished I load them in my car and take them to my studio where I dry them, bisq them, stain them, glaze them, and then high fire them. The process takes about 2-3 weeks and the finnished monsters are returned to you. I also have a studio that has plenty of space to hold a party here. It's located at 47th and Belmont in lower S.E. Portland. I charge $20 per individual to make a monster and I have a minimum party fee of $160. So 8 people or less will cost $160 and then $20 added to that for each additional participant. I can also send you some monster images to use in your invites. Feel free to call me if you need to talk about more details.
